I saw Fuck Buttons at Mercury Monday, although I am not sure if Merc was the right venue. These two guys make some awesome noise with laptops, synth keyboards, and toy instruments. Their music drones, twinkles, and clicks along sometimes to weird tribal beats or screaming in the background, which would be more fitting if we were all outside, around a campfire, with robots flying overhead and blowing things up, marking the end of human civilization. True those environs are not really possible but maybe they could have played on the floor.

Also in regards to their stupid name one would think the would at least have buttons at their merch table either that say "fuck" or have one letter per button. You could collect them all.

Lykke Li and El Perro del Mar played Bowery Ballroom last night. Before the show I was a little bitter for missing out on their Joe's Pub show one night earlier because both girls make dark, sad music that is probably more enjoyable sitting down. But once Lykke Li and her band took the stage, the room felt more like a party. She has a sexy hip-hop luster that is hard not to watch — the girl has stage dancing down to capital T. There is star power in her performance and her music is really catchy, Lykke Li seems poised to really break out.

El Perro del Mar put some extra energy into her show and really tried to get the crowd going but did not get quite the same response, maybe because the back of the room had cleared out. She is very talented musically but this show was overshadowed by her opener. Towards the end of the show, Lykke Li came back out to sing backup. The two of them sounded really great together, especially in they encore when the covered "After the Laughter (Comes Tears)." Their tour together has just started and I wonder if this dynamic will keep up.
I have not been there in a while but I guess they are clearing out the record store to make room for a second stage upstairs at the party. If only there were three stages they might have a theme.

Also there is an article in the new Time Out (their website is terrible and could really use a redesign) about the three owners. Here is an excerpt:

The two stages should enhance the venue’s laissez-faire atmosphere, which Curley likens to that of a house party. Ironically, much of this ambience stems from the club’s biggest handicap: the abominable sight lines, which cause spectators to push toward the performers. “There’s a more participatory vibe than someplace where there’s a strict separation between the audience and bands,” says Cause Co-Motion’s Liam, whose surname-deprived band plays Saturday and has recorded for the club’s seven-inch label, Cape Shok. “There’s not as much pretension of it being a rock show full of rock stars.”

Naturally, Cake Shop is no gold mine; naturally, this does not seem to matter. “Not to sound like a hippie, but I just wanted to open a place that felt right,” Bodor says. “I love the fact that we’re completely not what people are looking for on Ludlow. It’s kind of a respite—a little bit of humanity in the worst possible place.”

I don't know if the LES is "the worst possible place" you would want to find yourself, especially considering other places in the world like Baghdad or Murray Hill (zing!), but it has become pretty bad south of Houston on the weekends these days. Thankfully there are places like Cake Shop.

Come party tomorrow. It is a pretty nice bill for $3 so check out the full line-up after the jump.

Over two years ago I saw Langhorne Slim at the now defunkt Rothko in the Lower East Side, in fact, that show was the first post on this blog. Since then, Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles have seen two record labels (V2 who have since folded and Kemado who picked up the band), acquired a small army of loyal NYC fans, and recorded a new album.

Langhorne still sings twangy love songs and wears funny hats. Their new album, a few tracks withstanding (like the one below), gets bogged down in muddled production. The heart of this band is in the energy of their live show and the earnest grit of Langhorne's lyrics. All that said, I still think he is a great performer and song writer.

On Wednesday everyone at Mercury Lounge was in high spirits for their long over-due self-titled album release party. Striped down to just an acoustic guitar, stand-up bass, drums, and an occasional harmonica, the band really delivered.

You can see for yourself when Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles play Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 31st.
<line br/>
Also at the show, there was much talk of Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson or MBAR as some of the kids call him. Look out for this guy but he will probably come to you considering folks from Grizzly Bear and TV on the Radio are helping him along. He plays Cake Shop on May 11th.

Jay Reatard, the full band, is three chubby dude with three distinct haircuts. Picture on stage at Bowery, the triangle of Mr. Reatard, himself, singing behind a curly mop shrouding his face while next to another guy of slightly more girth who has the same do but hair exploding outwards. Both are playing flying V guitars. Behind them, the drummer is in a tank top and a frizzy, blonde, metal hairdo with short bangs, probably to see where the symbols are. These three dudes are all drinking from the same shoe and form one "Jay Reatard," who played for twenty exhilarating minutes on Monday night. This show had real punk rock energy (not like that post-punk energy of Sunday) and the crowd danced around in chaos. And nobody got punched (see below). The band did not say a word either. Nor did they play an encore. But I think we all got our 66¢-a-minute's worth.

Camera is still busted. I am working on it. I hope this video suffices. Sometimes shit gets out of hand at a show. It is amazing these kids sold out three separate shows in New York. They have traded in their flags and signs for bright flashing lights. Red still covered the stage. I walked into the show a little dreary from the weekend but the minute they came on stage I was jolted awake. I have not been to a show like that in ages where the energy of the crowd and the band was through the roof. Their album Elephant Shell comes out tomorrow but most of the crowd already knew it.

Smoosh opened. They were cute. You don't see many female drummers, and you especially don't see many teenage female drummers so props to her. Sticking with the premise of the opening band should not be older than the headliner, maybe when Smoosh headlines the Bowery Ballroom they can get Tiny Masters of Today to open for them.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the show because my camera was dead but if some surface I may update the post.

In a few short months, it will be Summer and that means the second annual After the Jump Fest! Bigger, better with even more acts and surprise guests, this year the festival takes place along side the city wide music event, Make Music New York (which itself is a part of the worldwide music phenomenon that takes place in 300 cities in 108 countries) on the first day of Summer, June 21st.

After the Jump Fest is the effort of 20 New York City music bloggers whose goal is to help new artists gain exposure while raising money for struggling school music programs. According to sources on the internet, Swedish singer Lykke Li's real name is Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson. This must get confusing when people are referring to her and/or her music but I bet she has become used to responding to any combination of Lykke and Li. Maybe she has always gone with her middle name first.

Likewise, the origins of her music are not easily explained. I am still trying to figure out if she will have a backing band at her show or if it will just be her and a keyboard with samples on stage. Either way it works on record. Her album Youth Novels has the feel of a rainy day, not too exuberant and not too sullen. Horns whimper, pianos cry, but Lykke Li is optimistic. Check her out when she comes back to the U.S.

I don't 100% agree with some of his star ratings but the reviews are funny. However his star distribution chart showing 254 of 763 bands getting only one star (the please kill me rating) seems about right — because lots of bands out there just suck. The only thing that is missing is the a graph showing the amount of time he spent doing this (he says he listened to all the songs in full) and how that adds up for each star rating.

Tony Silver - co-director of Style Wars - died earlier this month. Tony, along with famed graffiti photographer Henry Chalfant created a serious documentary about graffiti and hip hop in the early eighties as it was happening. The movie is great because it covers graffiti in New York from all angles: the writers, their parents, the city, the commuters, the fine art world, and the hip hop world. The movie also captures the vibrancy of rapping, break dancing, DJing, and hip hop fashion at that time. It is probably best documentary about hip hop that I have ever seen. Also the opening title sequence is pretty good. (via The Daily Swarm)
Here is an updated calendar. Hot Chip and Joanna Newsom both perform this weekend but their shows have long been sold out. There are still somethings going on.

Phosphorescent and new French Kiss signees The DoDos play Union Pool Saturday. I heard good things about their Mercury Lounge show on Monday.

Singer-songwriter Peasant is playing coffee shops all over the city this weekend. It might be a nice change of scenery than the normal venues. Peasant is on Paper Garden, which is also the home of the awesome Eagle Seagull. Below are some MP3 links via Brooklyn Vegan.

Apt One and Skinny Friedman will DJ then Cousin Cole and Pocketknife will also throw down. Looks good. Free baked goods by Dots will also be in the house. Also if you are in Philly this weekend you don't want to miss the Mad Pu$$y Party at Transit on Saturday. The DJ duo Philadelphyinz are blowing up down there and you might as well catch them before they go on tour. This is also free before 11PM and after that it is only $5 with RSVP. Also, I hear there will be free PBR 10-12. Woot.

Finally, get your Lightspeed Champion tickets. Dev is coming.
Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip (above) are coming back to New York for a headlineing show at Bowery Ballroom. I saw them at Mercury and while they had no instruments they were highly entertaining. But frankly, I am suprised the duo is playing there since they have yet to release an album.

Jonny Greenwood’s “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” will be performed by the Wordless Music Orchestra on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, Columbus Avenue at 60th Street. The New York Times has a writeup about both Wordless Music and Greenwood's classical composition. There has been some confusion about who is actually performing at the show but all that seems sorted now.

Jack Peñate is coming to New York this month. I think the proper way to say his last name is "pen-ya-tay" but I have also heard that "pen-ah-tay" is acceptable. You can read about him in the latest issue of Dummy. The print mag is available online.

Check out the latest issue of Fader to while you are reading print mags off of a screen, especially the party pics from their last issue release. You never know who you might see.
Lightspeed Champion, formerly of Test Icicles, has also planned a trip to New York in the spring. Since I did not do a best of list yet (never?) for this year, I will start with this one: Lightspeed Champion - Best Haircut of 2007. Yes he beats the Klaxons.

The Hatch—one of the first bands to be eliminated from America's Next Great Band—is playing Luna Lounge. I am not saying you should go but it is still funny you can book a tour off that.

Finally, the Army is looking for a "professional celebrity rock music band" tour Kuwait and Afghanistan. Read about the band's (if they find one) mission here.

Here is an updated show list with the additions in red.
