MisShapes Who?

This story is kind of funny, if only it were that easy. The kid has supposedly yet to return home to face the wrath of his parents.

A boy who threw a house party that ended in a near-riot of 500 people has acquired celebrity status, striking a magazine deal, fielding lucrative offers to promote under-age events and inspiring supporters worldwide on social networking websites. . . . (read the rest here).

Greenwood's Popcorn, Le Sac vs. Pip, Jack & Dummy, Best Haircut of 2007, and Unlikely Tours

LeSac_vs_Pip_14Dec07.JPG
---
Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip (above) are coming back to New York for a headlineing show at Bowery Ballroom. I saw them at Mercury and while they had no instruments they were highly entertaining. But frankly, I am suprised the duo is playing there since they have yet to release an album.

Jonny Greenwood’s “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” will be performed by the Wordless Music Orchestra on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, Columbus Avenue at 60th Street. The New York Times has a writeup about both Wordless Music and Greenwood's classical composition. There has been some confusion about who is actually performing at the show but all that seems sorted now.

Jack Peñate is coming to New York this month. I think the proper way to say his last name is "pen-ya-tay" but I have also heard that "pen-ah-tay" is acceptable. You can read about him in the latest issue of Dummy. The print mag is available online.

Check out the latest issue of Fader to while you are reading print mags off of a screen, especially the party pics from their last issue release. You never know who you might see.

lightspeedchampion_hair.jpgLightspeed Champion, formerly of Test Icicles, has also planned a trip to New York in the spring. Since I did not do a best of list yet (never?) for this year, I will start with this one: Lightspeed Champion - Best Haircut of 2007. Yes he beats the Klaxons.

The Hatch—one of the first bands to be eliminated from America's Next Great Band—is playing Luna Lounge. I am not saying you should go but it is still funny you can book a tour off that.

Finally, the Army is looking for a "professional celebrity rock music band" tour Kuwait and Afghanistan. Read about the band's (if they find one) mission here.

Here is an updated show list with the additions in red.

Kate Nash at Bowery Ballroom

katenash_bowery_09jan08_02.jpg

I saw Kate Nash at Bowery Ballroom yesterday. It was a great show to start 2008. I liked Joe's Pub better though because people were quiet and the sound was crystal clear. A "loyal reader" sent this encouraging me to review the Bowery show because of the lack of recent posts on this blog. Honestly, this is better than my review at Product Shop.

Just say she is good pop, catchy, more intelligent lyrically than say ashlee simpson. . . and everyone enjoys a good pop album, even bloggers, admit it. Sometimes you just want a catchy tune that isn't too synthesized and about trying to get guys/girls. and we all know the blogs will come out soon to denounce her after she blows up in the US, because now, she is no longer indie enough. everyone knows about her. her second album is way too pop, not enough emo, and they started featuring her on mtv but, her album will still be good and mtv will still probably suck.
You should also praise Chris Brown's [dancing] abilities.

The Mountain Goats are going back on tour. Yes. They will play Webster Hall and Music Hall of Williamsburg in March. Somehow, the Music Hall show seems more appealing than the last time they were here at Bowery. Tickets.

Upcoming Shows: A Quick View of the Next Three Months

gallows.jpgSo I am going to try to start the New Year off on a good foot and update this blog more regularly. Here is list of shows in the coming months I would recommend. Mark your calendars especially for Jack Penate, The Teenagers, Robyn, Gallows, Foals, and Le Loup. These bands have yet to really test the waters of NYC except for the few who were here for CMJ.
