Quick Reviews and Links

There are so many shows I just don't have time to write about. I am not sure what is the best order to do this but here goes.

WELCOME TO DREAMLAND :: CARNEGIE HALL
February 2, 2007
I will admit this was my first time going to Carnegie Hall but anytime you get Vetiver, Coco Rosie, and David Byrne in a room, I will probably be there. After much practicing, we arrived at the show and took our seats in the balcony. The place is huge; if you get board with the performers you can just look at all the molding on the walls. All the bands – CoCo Rosie, Adem, Cbelle, Vetiver, Vashti Bunyan, and Devendra Banhart – were helping each other out on stage, so there was a lot of collaboration and the bands had any instrument there at their disposal. Everyone came out, even David Byrne, for the last song in encore.

GIRL TALK :: STUDIO B
February 9, 2007
Girl Talk at Studio B was pretty crazy, who knew. If he would just release this mixes on the internet he could orchestrate an arm of drones to push play on a tape deck and have a worldwide concert in every major city on the planet. What I am saying is that his presence at the show is not contingent upon people dancing there. Studio B was packed and the crowd got a little wild—I lost a shoe. Yes I had to hobble home.

WHITE RABBITS :: LUNA LOUNGE – MOVABLE HYPE 11.O
February 15, 2007
Wow, there have been a lot of Moveable Hypes. There are too many rabbit bands out there, there is not enough room in indie rock unlike horse or wolf, I would be happy if White Rabbits made the cut. These guys do well in twos; they have two great drummers and two complimentary singers.

PELA :: MERCURY LOUNGE
February 16, 2007
Pela went on a mini-tour last weekend. Their fully mastered album comes out soon. Full review at Product Shop.

February 18, 2007
Rock Plaza Central wants to tell you about the difficulties of being a horse in a sci-fi world. Full review at Product Shop.

MALAJUBE :: MERCURY LOUNGE
February 18, 2007
Yes. Malajube, a Canadian band whose lyrics I can't understand but songs I really dig, finally returned to New York. Full review at Product Shop.

The Undisputed Heavyweights EP Release Party Tonight

heavyepcover.jpgThe Undisputed Heavyweights are set to release an EP entitled Live From New York City that was recorded at Joe's Pub. They are having a party tonight at The Mercury Lounge at 9:30. Buy the EP because 20% of the proceeds will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Sowbackya Illam Children's Home in India.

Casey, Jeff, and Wes combine uptown big-band swing with downtown rock debauchery. Casey is probably the lovespawn of Frank Sinatra who becomes a certified crazy when he gets on the microphone. Their live sets epitomize the heart of the band so check out the show.

(Disclosure: I know these dudes. You might also know Wes from his Hip Hop Roundups at Brooklyn Vegan.)

UPCOMING SHOW (TONIGHT!)
FEB 22 :: The Undisputed Heavy Weights @ The Mercury Lounge. 9:30pm. $10.

Can It Get Any Better?

arcadefire_17Feb07_13.jpg

You may be sick of hearing about The Arcade Fire shows at Judson Memorial Church but those songs are still ringing in my ears. Instead of ending with "Wake Up" in the middle of the crowd, like they had on previous nights, the band marched into the sanctuary to play this song first. This surprise immediately hooked the crowd into a sing-along that probably would have continued if the band had not moved to the stage. Regine was tirelessly switching from wheel fiddle, to keyboard, to drums, to singing and dancing on songs like "Haiti." Winn was also in good spirits making jokes about Giuliani and performed like he was not even sick. The show was exhilarating. Four or five cameras were filming for Lance Bangs' tour documentary. We can only hope that when they come back to New York in May that it is at a descent venue. The Arcade Fire seems unstoppable and could probably continue to sell that church out until Neon Bible comes out on March 6th.

Secret Ted Leo Show at Mercury Lounge on 2/25 ??? & !!!

The Battering Room brings our attention to The Sons of Cain headlining the Mercury Lounge next Sunday February 25th. It is probably not the UK hard-rockers by the same name because on their website they say "There are no forthcoming gigs at the moment." And it seems they have been looking for a new bassist since April.

Download Ted Leo's new single – "The Sons of Cain" – at The Hype Machine. He has a ton more free MP3s on his website under Audio. Maybe grab them using DownThemAll.

Regardless we will be at the Merc. Hopefully so will Ted Leo & The Pharmacists. !!! is already sold out. Must be the moon or the free booze. Also The Battering Room is having Knockout II at Union Hall Friday. Sure Juror is playing. Go! Movable Hype 11.0 is tonight. White Rabbits are playing. Go!

UPDATE
This is definitely Ted Leo and a few tickets are back on sale!

UPDATE II

Due to illness Sons of Cain (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists) have cancelled their performance on Sunday, February 25th. We apologize for any inconvenience. Tickets are valid for entry to see Brother Reverend and Blip Blip Bleep. Refunds are are available at point of purchase.

Thanks,
Mercury Lounge

No Star Is Too Small To Use

younggalaxy1.jpg

Stephen Ramsey, long-time touring guitarist for Stars, has formed a band with Catherine McCandless called Young Galaxy. He said he did not want the band to seem like a side project of Stars so naturally they named it something way bigger with gas, dust, and dark matter thrown in there too. And they signed to the same record label – Arts & Crafts.

Nonetheless, his spacey guitar work, the deep drones of their keyboard, and their dreamy vocal combo make for a good listen.

Young Galaxy recently toured with The Dears and will be at SXSW. Their self-titled album will available in April. For now, here are two tracks from their tour EP with the second not slated to be on the album.

Bonus commentary. How many other bands or rappers are there out there that use ‘young’ in their name? Fine Young Cannibals, New Young Pony Club, Young Knives, Young Love, Young Widows, Young Dubliners, Young Jeezy, Young Joc, Young Buck, and Young Dro. And about half of these bands will be at SXSW. Neil Young gets a pass.
